The places we live in shape how we move, interact, and ultimately, how healthy we are. A new large-scale study published in Nature (2025) provides strong causal evidence that moving to a more walkable city significantly increases daily physical activity—measured in steps—sustained over time.
Based on longitudinal smartphone data from more than 2.1 million people and leveraging a natural experiment with thousands of individuals who changed residence between cities, the study demonstrates that the built environment is not just a backdrop for human behavior—it actively transforms it.
For decades, researchers have debated whether people walk more because of the neighborhoods they live in, or if active individuals simply choose to live in walkable places. The distinction matters for urban planning and public health: if walkability causes higher activity, then cities can be redesigned to directly improve population health.
The new study, led by Tim Althoff (University of Washington / Stanford) along with colleagues from Stanford University and NVIDIA Research, approached this challenge through a natural experiment. By examining what happens when people move to cities with higher or lower walkability, the researchers were able to observe real-life behavioral changes.
The researchers analyzed anonymized step-count data collected through the Argus fitness tracking app. This dataset covered more than 2.1 million users across the United States, providing an unprecedented window into daily activity.
Within this dataset, a natural subgroup of approximately 5,400 people who moved between 1,609 cities was identified. By comparing activity levels before and after moving—and contrasting them with controls who did not move—the team applied advanced statistical models (difference-in-differences, mixed-effects models) to isolate the impact of urban walkability.
Walkability itself was quantified through aggregated indices (such as Walk Score), measuring street connectivity, access to amenities, and pedestrian infrastructure. Importantly, the models controlled for fixed individual effects (like personal habits) and temporal factors (such as seasonal variation).
Limitations remain: app users are not fully representative of the population, and moving often involves lifestyle changes (new jobs, schools, or social networks) that could influence activity. Nonetheless, the large sample size and robustness checks provide compelling evidence.
The headline result: moving to a more walkable city led to an average increase of about 1,100 steps per day—roughly 11 extra minutes of walking. Conversely, relocating to a less walkable city resulted in decreased activity.
This effect was not short-lived. The additional steps persisted for months after relocation, indicating a lasting behavioral shift rather than a temporary novelty effect.
The impact was strongest when the difference in walkability between the two cities was large, and it held across different demographic groups, although the magnitude varied. The study also found that walkability influenced both utilitarian walking (commutes, errands) and recreational walking, suggesting that the built environment reshapes overall movement patterns.
As Boris Ivanovic, co-author from NVIDIA Research, explained in coverage by EurekAlert!: “Our findings suggest that walkable environments encourage sustainable, long-term increases in physical activity across diverse populations.”
From a public health perspective, an additional 1,100 steps per day is not trivial. At the population level, such an increase could significantly improve cardiovascular and metabolic health outcomes. Unlike interventions that rely on individual motivation, walkable environments naturally integrate activity into daily life.
The policy implications are clear: designing cities with connected sidewalks, mixed-use zoning, safe pedestrian crossings, and accessible public spaces is not just an urban planning issue—it is a public health intervention.
The authors emphasize that further research should expand beyond U.S. data, particularly into cities in Latin America, Europe, and Asia, where urban design challenges differ. Equity concerns also matter: who benefits most from walkable infrastructure, and how can access be expanded fairly?
This nationwide natural experiment provides rare causal evidence linking the built environment to physical activity. The message is simple yet powerful: when cities are designed for walking, people walk more—and the benefits accumulate day after day.
In a world where sedentary lifestyles are driving chronic disease, urban walkability emerges as one of the most effective, scalable tools to promote health. City leaders, planners, and public health officials should take note: building for walkability means building for healthier, longer lives.
