From rainforests to farmlands, cities to savannahs, how we use the land determines the future of our climate, biodiversity, food security, and social justice. Yet, land systems are more than mere physical spaces—they are social-ecological constructs, entangled in historical paths, power structures, and global economic flows. In a landmark article published in PNAS, a group of over 70 interdisciplinary experts outlines ten empirically grounded facts that must inform future policies for land sustainability.
This synthesis, led by Patrick Meyfroidt and co-authors from institutions across five continents, calls for a radical rethinking of how governments, corporations, and citizens understand and govern the land.
Land is essential to solving our biggest global challenges. But its complexity, fragmentation of rights, and unequal benefits make it difficult to manage sustainably.

Win-win scenarios are rare. Promoting renewable energy may conflict with food production or conservation. Effective policy requires explicit negotiation of trade-offs, not blind optimism.
Land tenure systems can be overlapping, contradictory, or informal—especially in regions where colonial legacies persist. This legal ambiguity fuels land conflict and weakens conservation efforts.
Wealthy countries and industries often reap the benefits of land use, while marginalized communities bear the environmental and social costs.
Land justice encompasses spatial, cultural, intergenerational, and procedural dimensions. A one-size-fits-all approach is not only ineffective—it's unjust.
The authors call for land policies that embrace complexity instead of simplifying it. This includes:
"Simple solutions are alluring but often misleading," the authors warn. "Sustainable land use must negotiate conflicting values, unequal power, and systemic uncertainty."
