PhysAnimator introduces a novel approach to 2D animation by combining physics-based simulation of deformable bodies with generative diffusion models, producing visually consistent, physically plausible anime clips from a single static image.

Using Meta’s Segment Anything Model (SAM), PhysAnimator automatically identifies parts of the character — such as hair, clothing, or ribbons — then overlays each with a 2D triangular mesh. These serve as the physical "bones" of motion.
This is the heart of PhysAnimator. The system applies deformable body physics (specifically, a fixed corotated model) to simulate motion based on internal material forces and external forces like wind — controlled by "energy strokes", or brush-like input defining motion direction.

Rigging points anchor the object in place, and the system solves Newton’s equations to compute how it moves over time.
With a physically realistic motion field generated, the original drawing is deformed frame by frame. These deformed frames are passed through a diffusion-based video synthesis model, which colors them while preserving anime style and temporal consistency.
To amplify dynamism, users can apply anime-style exaggerations (like squash and stretch) using a sketch interpolation model. This ensures not only realism but artistic expressiveness.
Unlike pure video diffusion models, PhysAnimator doesn’t hallucinate motion — it simulates it, grounding each frame in physics. This removes visual glitches and supports more natural flow.
By using energy strokes and rig points, artists can intuitively guide the simulation without coding or physics knowledge. Want the cape to flutter backward? Just draw a stroke — no need to keyframe it.
Despite all the technical layers, PhysAnimator maintains the aesthetic richness of anime. The sketch-guided diffusion model ensures consistent linework, shading, and character design throughout the clip.
